Kacha Thai Market: my new lunch to beat
I had this one circled for a week. Michael M told me I had to get to Kacha Thai Market in downtown Royal Oak, and when Michael makes a food recommendation, I listen. So on June 25th we went, and it lived up to every bit of the buildup. It calls itself Thai street food, and after one lunch I’m a believer.
I walked out already sure this one was going to be hard to beat for a while. Rolled out, I should say. I still catch myself saying walked, same way I’ll happily tell someone I’m heading out for a walk when there are very obviously four wheels doing the work.
The food
We started with the tom yum, the clear version, and I did not know it was about to punch me in the mouth. Here is the part nobody warns you about: the soup spoon basically forces you to slurp, so that first big pull sent the chiles straight down my throat and I was coughing before I knew what happened. I promise that is a compliment. Once I caught my breath it was outstanding, bright and sour with a real kick, and I kept going back for more.
Next we split the Moo Ping, the grilled pork skewers. Great flavor and even better quality, tender pieces of pork grilled just right. Simple, smoky, and gone fast.
Michael talked me into splitting the Som Tum, the green papaya salad, and I honestly did not have high hopes for it. Wrong again. Like the soup, it had a kick, and it was so good that I was a little mad at myself for almost skipping it.
For his main, Michael went with the Panang curry. Coconut curry is not my thing, so I left that one to him, but he was very happy with it and it looked the part, creamy and deep orange with peppers all the way through.
Then there was my own plate, the Pad See Ew. I got it as the lunch special and upgraded to beef, which was the right move. Our waitress actually steered me off medium spice, so I trusted her and went mild plus. Good call. Still loaded with flavor, wide noodles with a nice char, and I never once regretted the spice level. It’s sitting up top of this post for a reason.
The vibe
Kacha is right on Main Street in downtown Royal Oak. Inside it’s bright and colorful, with woven lamp shades over the counter, some flowers around, and mismatched metal chairs at the tables. It was clean and had a good feel to it. For how good the food was, the prices were more than fair. Value, cleanliness, and quality were all there.
Wheels-eye view
Easy day on this one. There is a handicap spot in the lot behind the building, and from there the front door was no trouble at all. Inside is wide open with plenty of room between tables, a smooth tile floor, and freestanding chairs that are easy to slide out of the way, so pulling up to a table was a non-issue.
Full honesty: I did not check the restroom. That puts me 0 for 2 on that, and I am calling myself out. Starting now I am making the restroom part of the routine, because it is exactly the kind of thing this blog is supposed to tell you.
The verdict
Three and a half wheels, and I do not hand those out lightly. The quality, the value, and the cleanliness were all excellent, and I would come back in a heartbeat. Honestly I think this one is going to sit near the top of my list for a while. I hope something knocks it off, because that would mean I found somewhere even better. For now though, Kacha is the one to beat.
